Crystal Bird Fauset Digital Statue

Augmented Reality Intervention, 2020

Digital Statue of Crystal Bird Fauset in front of the Philadelphia Municipal Services Building. Recorded on 2020-06-07

On June 3, 2020, the statue of Frank Rizzo was removed from the steps of the Municipal Services Building in Philadelphia, PA.

Rizzo was a controversial figure who was a strong opponent of desegregation. During his tenure as police commissioner and mayor from 1967 to 1980, the police department engaged in patterns of police brutality, intimidation, coercion and disregard for constitutional rights. (Link) His statue was placed in 1998 as a donation by private contributions from his family, friends and supporters.

Thanks to the protesters, the city is finally free from one painful celebration of violence and hate. This digital AR statue of Crystal Bird Fauset was designed to honor someone who has worked for justice and equality instead. Our public spaces must become representative of the population and our values today.

Crystal Bird Fauset (June 27, 1893 – March 27, 1965) was a civil rights activist, social worker, race relations specialist, and the first female African American state legislator elected in the United States, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Link)
